Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, confirmed a series of updates and improvements to its pre-trained language model technology during his DevDay conference. One of the most notable announcements was the launch of GPT-4 Turbo, an advanced version of the GPT-4 language model (the ChatGPT “engine”), now available to ChatGPT Plus users. This new version is not only more powerful than its predecessor, but also more affordable. GPT-4 Turbo is capable of understanding world events until April 2023, a significant advance compared to GPT-4, which was trained with data only until September 2021.

An impressive aspect of GPT-4 Turbo is its ability to handle a large context of 128K tokens, equivalent to about 300 pages of text in a single prompt. Additionally, improvements have been made to function calls, resulting in better performance on tasks that require precise following of instructions. OpenAI has also introduced a new JSON mode and seed parameter that allows the model to generate consistent completions most of the time.

In terms of pricing, GPT-4 Turbo is more affordable than ever. The cost per 1,000 entry tokens is just $0.01, which is equivalent to approximately 750 words. This means that GPT-4 Turbo is three times cheaper in terms of input tokens and two times cheaper in output tokens compared to GPT-4.

During the news presentation event OpenAI did not forget about its previous model, GPT-3.5 Turbo, which also received significant improvements. Among others, a 16K context window and improved instruction tracking. Additionally, the company embarked on an exciting project called GPT Store, which will allow the community to develop custom versions of ChatGPT for specific applications, such as productivity and education.

A particularly interesting announcement was the introduction of the Copyright Shield, a measure taken by OpenAI to protect its customers against potential accusations of copyright infringement. The company promised to intervene and defend the accused in the event of legal claims.

These announcements mark a major step forward for OpenAI in its effort to lead in the field of generative artificial intelligence. With model improvements, lower prices, and legal protection, OpenAI is in a strong position in a highly competitive market.

Despite the excitement generated by these updates, the company also confirmed that although they are not working on GPT-5 at the moment, they intend to do so in the future, indicating a continued commitment to innovation.
