Maker Recreates Classic Winamp MP3 Player in Real Life with the Linamp, Llamas Not Included

A blast from the past has been resurrected in physical form as a talented maker brings the iconic Winamp MP3 player to life with the Linamp. This real-life version of the beloved software combines retro design with modern technology, creating a nostalgic experience for music enthusiasts.

The Linamp system is powered by a Raspberry Pi 4B with a 32GB SD card, utilizing a 7.9-inch touchscreen to display the classic Winamp user interface. The project was brought to life by Rodmg, a software engineer turned maker, who meticulously designed and built the entire system.

Driven by Dietpi, a Debian bookworm derivative, the custom Qt 6 app written in C++ with Qt widgets powers the display, showcasing the familiar spectrum analyzer visualization and track information. Rodmg’s attention to detail extends to the physical design, inspired by an Aiwa stereo from his childhood, with the case constructed from sheet metal for authenticity.

The Linamp isn’t just about looks – it’s a fully functional music player capable of playing music from its file system as well as external CD drives. With plans to incorporate Bluetooth and Spotify playback in the future, Rodmg’s creation continues to evolve, offering a blend of retro aesthetics and modern functionality.

As technology continues to advance, projects like the Linamp serve as a reminder of the timeless appeal of classic designs. Rodmg’s dedication to recreating the Winamp experience in physical form showcases the enduring popularity of nostalgic technology, bridging the gap between past and present in a unique and innovative way.
