There is only one document that identifies us as natural persons in Spain and that we are obliged to possess: the National Identity Document (DNI). We take it anywhere in case we need to be officially identified but, in recent times, digitization has allowed us to have it online directly on our smartphone at the click of a button. No physical cards. This is how the electronic National Identity Document (DNIe) has emerged, a document that certifies “digitally the personal identity of the holder, allows the electronic signature of documents and gives its bearer the possibility of using the electronic identity in as many digital services as are available” ensures from the official portal of electronic DNI of the General Directorate of Police.
To find out if your conventional DNI is also electronic and you can choose to install the DNIe on your mobile phone, you must check if your physical card has a chip, if so you are in possession of a DNIe. Once we are clear about it, we can proceed to install it on the smartphone. Of course, you should know that for this you must have an Android device and the DNI model ‘DNI 3.0’ or higher. In other words, a DNI that has been issued from the year 2015.
The DNIe can be defined as the traditional DNI but with NFC touch technology, (Near Field Communication), a wireless technology that allows all types of data to be exchanged, for example, it is the technology used to make payments through the smartphone.
