In Lakeland, Florida, a brave man named Anthony Slater risked his life to save two children from a burning car. Sadly, only one child survived. Slater, who is currently recovering in the hospital with severe burns on his arms, heard a father’s desperate cries for help and immediately sprang into action.

The crash occurred in a wooded area near the intersection of Broadway Street and Lake Parker Drive East, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. Slater managed to rescue a 3-year-old boy from the back seat of the car, but he also noticed a little girl in a car seat who was unconscious. Despite his best efforts to save her after she regained consciousness, the girl tragically did not make it.

Neighbors who heard the father’s pleas for help called 911, but the flames were too intense for them to intervene. Witness Hal Clark described the heartbreaking scene, emphasizing how difficult it was to reach the victims in time.

Although Slater couldn’t save the little girl, he expressed his relief that he was able to rescue her brother. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office commended Slater for his heroic actions and confirmed that the 3-year-old boy and his father are expected to recover.

Slater’s selfless act serves as a reminder of the importance of stepping in to help others in times of crisis. His bravery and quick thinking saved one life and inspired those around him. Our thoughts are with the family of the little girl who did not survive, as well as with Slater as he recovers from his injuries. We salute all the first responders and witnesses who did their best to assist in this tragic situation.
