A Ferguson police officer who sustained a severe brain injury three months ago is set to be released from the hospital, as reported by FOX 2 News. Officer Travis Brown has made significant progress in his recovery and is ready to be transferred from Saint Louis University Hospital to a specialized treatment facility.
Brown’s family shared with FOX 2’s Jasmine Huda that he will be accompanied by a police escort consisting of law enforcement officers from various agencies in the region. The escort will accompany Brown from SLU Hospital to Spirit Airport in Chesterfield at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
The incident that led to Officer Brown’s injury occurred on August 9, during a protest outside the Ferguson Police Department commemorating the 10th anniversary of Michael Brown’s shooting death. Some protesters damaged the entryway fence of the department parking lot, prompting Officer Brown and his team to respond.
In the midst of the chaos, a protester, identified as Elijah M. Gantt of East St. Louis, violently tackled Officer Brown, causing him to fall to the ground and sustain a brain injury. Gantt was swiftly apprehended with the assistance of two other officers, who also sustained minor injuries during the altercation. Multiple protesters were arrested in connection with the incident.
Following the arrest, the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Gantt with first-degree assault, rioting, resisting arrest, evidence tampering, attempted escape while under arrest, first-degree property damage, and five counts of fourth-degree assault.
The community has rallied behind Officer Brown and his family, offering support and well-wishes for his continued recovery. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks that law enforcement officers face in the line of duty and the importance of recognizing and honoring their sacrifices.
As Officer Brown prepares to transition to a facility for specialized treatment, his colleagues and the community at large stand ready to support him on his journey towards full recovery. We wish Officer Brown a speedy and successful rehabilitation as he continues to heal from his injuries and regain his strength.
