The Pixel phone’s camera has consistently ranked among the best in the industry. Many users, including myself, have found Google’s handsets to offer top-notch photography capabilities. My Pixel 8 Pro, in particular, captures stunning photos with ease. However, I often wished for more power and flexibility in my camera. With the latest Android feature drop in June 2024, my wish has been granted.

According to a report by 9to5Google, the Pixel Camera app now allows users to choose which rear lens (Ultra Wide, Wide, or Telephoto) and which resolution (12 MP or 50 MP, exclusive to the Pixel 8 Pro) they want to use for their shots. Additionally, Google has relocated the JPEG or RAW format selection to the new Pro tab. It’s important to note that RAW photos offer more detail and control but consume more storage space compared to JPEG images.

If you opt for manual lens selection, you will see three options above the shutter button – Ultra Wide, Wide, or Telephoto. You can tap on your preferred option to switch between lenses, each offering impressive differences. The Wide lens is the default choice, but using the Telephoto lens requires a steady hand to avoid blurry photos. Using a tripod is recommended for the best results with the Telephoto lens.

Once the RAW option is enabled, you can easily switch between JPEG and RAW formats when viewing the image. To access the Pro tab, simply open the Camera app on your Pixel phone and tap the gear icon in the bottom-left corner. Here, you will find the General and Pro tabs, with the Pro tab containing options for Resolution, RAW/JPEG, and Lens Selection.

In addition to these new features, the enhanced HDR+ now excels at identifying the optimal moment to capture in a photo. The June 2024 feature drop introduces these new camera app features to the Pixel 6/7/8 Pro and Fold models. To enjoy these enhancements, make sure to update your Pixel Camera to version 9.4.103.641377609.23. Owners of the Pixel 8 Pro can also adjust Focus, Shutter Speed, and ISO settings for even more control over their photos, resulting in stunning outcomes for those familiar with these options.

With these advancements, Google’s Pixel phones continue to maintain their reputation as top choices for photography enthusiasts. The combination of innovative features and user-friendly design makes the Pixel camera a standout option in the competitive smartphone market. As technology continues to evolve, Google remains at the forefront of pushing boundaries and delivering exceptional camera experiences to users.
