Xeno & Oaklander: Retrofuturistic Synth Pop Do’s and Don’ts – Chicago Reader

Xeno & Oaklander, the long-standing electronic duo known for their minimalistic sound, took a new direction with their 2019 album Hypnos. This album showcased a more pop-forward approach, moving away from their usual monochromatic textures. The success of this change led them to continue down this colorful path with their 2021 release, Vi/deo, which was recorded in their home studio in Connecticut during the pandemic.

The songs on Vi/deo strike a balance between nostalgia and modernity, with tracks like “Infinite Sadness” blending wistful vocals with bold rhythms and foreboding melodies. The icy “Raingarden” has an uncanny feel, reminiscent of an 80s murder-mystery TV show theme song.

Xeno & Oaklander’s latest album, Via Negativa (In the Doorway Light), explores the concept of “what not to do,” but the musical execution is spot on. Songs like “Lost and There” showcase the duo’s ability to create suspenseful atmospheres, while “Actor’s Foil” features a strong rhythm that complements the vocal interplay between McBride and Wendelbro. “O Vermillion” highlights McBride’s deadpan delivery against Wendelbro’s airy singing, reminiscent of classic French pop.

The lush atmospheres and robust beats of Via Negativa are sure to shine even brighter in a live setting, making it a must-see for fans. The album release show at Beat Kitchen on November 26th will feature Panic Priest as the opening act. Tickets are priced at $15 for this 17+ event.
