Conmebol will introduce the pink card at the Copa América 2024, which will be held in the United States from June 21 to July 14. This card will be used to make an extra change in case a footballer has suffered a head injury during the match.
In order for the change to be carried out, the coach must notify the fourth referee or the main referee so that he can show the pink card. The implementation of this card seeks to protect the footballers, since the teams will be able to make six substitutions (seven, in case of extra time) if a player suffers a concussion in the middle of the match.
However, if another change is made at the same time as the change due to head trauma, one window will be deducted from the three available. In addition, the rival team may make a sixth substitution, either due to a physical issue or due to a tactical change by the coach.
Likewise, the regulations approved by the Conmebol Competitions Directorate indicate that “once the match has ended, within a maximum period of 24 hours, it will be mandatory for the doctor who has detected this suspicion of a cerebral concussion on the field of play to send the form SCAT5 (tool for evaluating concussions), signed by himself, to the Conmebol medical commission,” to prevent it from being used fraudulently.
