Wendy Eisenberg’s Eye Surgery-Inspired Song Cycle – Chicago Reader Review

news-09112024-110027

Wendy Eisenberg is known for their incredible skills as a guitarist and their ability to excel in both spontaneous and structured musical settings. However, their recent work has shown that there is much more to their music than just impressive shredding. In addition to their guitar prowess, Eisenberg has also showcased their talents as a singer and banjo player.

This year, Eisenberg has released two new recordings that blend improvisation and songwriting seamlessly. The first, “Accept When,” a collaboration with saxophonist Caroline Davis, features a mix of instrumentals and thought-provoking songs. The second, “Viewfinder,” a double LP released on American Dreams, delves into themes of transformation and self-examination.

The opening track of “Viewfinder,” titled “Lasik,” explores Eisenberg’s experience recovering from eye surgery. The song captures the essence of change and self-perception with a vocal delivery reminiscent of Robert Wyatt. The rest of the album continues to delve into these themes through a combination of expressive lyrics and intricate instrumentals.

Although Eisenberg has performed in Chicago in various roles, this concert marks their debut as a bandleader in the city. The ensemble accompanying Eisenberg includes trombonist Zekkereya El-magharbel, drummer Ryan Sawyer, and multi-instrumentalist Mari Maurice.

In addition to their own performance, Wendy Eisenberg will be joined by Big Bend for an unforgettable evening of music. The concert will take place on Friday, November 15th at Constellation. Tickets are $15 and the show is open to those 18 and older.

If you’re a fan of innovative and thought-provoking music, this concert is definitely one to mark on your calendar. Don’t miss the chance to experience Wendy Eisenberg’s unique blend of improvisation and songwriting live on stage.
