Oluwaseyi Adeleke, also known as Olu, is a graphic designer and the creator of the streetwear brand Prgrssn. Born as a first-generation Nigerian American, Olu is on a mission to build a universe filled with Black culture and stories. His shop is located in L1, a creative business accelerator program led by U. Chicago beneath the Garfield Green Line el station. Although he initially felt a lack of support from the program, Olu has transformed the location into a community hub rather than just a retail space.

Reflecting on his journey, Olu shares that he initially planned to pursue a career in medicine but ultimately decided to follow his passion for art. He believes that by pursuing his dreams, he is honoring the sacrifices his parents made to provide him with opportunities. Olu’s work is deeply rooted in Black culture, aiming to preserve and celebrate different aspects of Black life through his designs.

One of Olu’s primary goals is to decolonize his work and remove the white gaze from his creations. He wants his brand to center around Black stories and experiences, both historical and contemporary. Olu emphasizes that while anyone can wear his clothing, it is specifically designed with Black people in mind. His collections and lookbooks consistently highlight Black culture and narratives.

Looking ahead, Olu is focused on “Building a Better Universe,” a concept that guides his creative process. He is committed to telling stories that represent real-time Black history and experiences. Olu recently created a safety pin bracelet as a symbol of hope and dreaming, inspired by the impactful Black women in his life.

In addition to his artistic endeavors, Olu aims to foster a sense of community through his brand. He believes that Prgrssn attracts like-minded individuals who are proud of their Blackness and seek connections with others who share their values. Olu’s ultimate goal is to create a space where kind-hearted people can come together to celebrate their identities and build a supportive community.

Through his work, Olu hopes to inspire others to embrace their heritage, pursue their dreams, and connect with their roots. By sharing authentic Black stories and experiences, he is contributing to a more inclusive and diverse narrative in the world of fashion and design. Olu’s commitment to building a universe rich in Blackness is a testament to his passion for storytelling and cultural preservation.
