Universal Light: Three String Players Embrace Spontaneity, Acoustic Resonance, and American Folk

news-07102024-145013

Universal Light is a newly formed trio consisting of talented musicians with a rich history in various music genres. Fiddler Mike Gangloff, known for his work with Pelt and Black Twig Pickers, brings his experience from the 1990s to the group. Jesse Sheppard, a 12-string guitarist from Elkhorn, adds a unique blend of American Primitive guitar, psychedelic rock, and spiritual jazz to the mix. Cellist Kaily M. Schenker, known for her classical background and work with Solar Hex, contributes her gothic melodies and folk traditions from southwestern Virginia.

The trio’s sound is a fusion of improvised melodies and complex drones, creating a harmonious blend of acoustic resonance and American folk influences. Their self-released LP features three string trios that showcase their ability to spontaneously create hymn-like melodies surrounded by rich overtones. Additionally, the final piece on the album, “Squirrel Is a Pretty Thing,” highlights Schenker’s haunting vocals and harmonium skills as she delivers a poignant lament comparing the struggles of a woman seeking marriage to those of wildlife facing survival.

The upcoming concert featuring Universal Light at Hungry Brain promises to be a night of musical exploration and innovation. Opening the show is the talented double bassist Joshua Abrams from Natural Information Society, followed by Universal Light’s performance. The local “power ambient” quintet Chord will close the event with new music in their headlining set.

Don’t miss the opportunity to witness the magic of Universal Light live on stage at Hungry Brain on Saturday, October 12th at 9 PM. Tickets are priced at $15, and the event is open to those aged 21 and above.
