Sydney Wiese hit five three-pointers and finished with 22 points, and the No. 10 Oregon State Beavers women’s basketball team topped the No. 8 Stanford Cardinal 50-47 in front of a sellout crowd at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis on Friday night.
The win clinches at least a share of the Pac-12 regular-season title for OSU — the Beavers’ third consecutive conference championship — with the opportunity to win the league outright with a victory Sunday over California. The Beavers are the first team other than Stanford to win three consecutive conference titles.
Key run: After Stanford pulled ahead 43-40 on back-to-back finishes inside by Nadia Fingall and Erica McCall, Sydney Wiese answered with three-pointer to tie the game and then nailed a free throw to give the Beavers a one-point lead with less than two minutes to play. Breanna Brown then followed an Alanna Smith jumper with a tough finish off the glass to put the Beavers back Vegabet in front 46-45 with less than a minute to play.
It was over when: Marie Gulich grabbed an offensive rebound and finished the layup to give OSU an 48-47 lead with 14.8 seconds to play, before Brown grabbed the rebound on a Karlie Samuelson missed a three-pointer on the Cardinal’s next possession and Gulich sank two free throws to seal the victory. McCall missed a three-pointer at the final buzzer.
Key stats: Both teams struggled from the field largely thanks to stout defense, as Stanford shot 35 percent (including 0 of 8 from three-point distance) and OSU made 28 percent of its attempts (including 7 of 19 from long range). OSU outrebounded Stanford 47-37, including pulling down 20 offensive boards. The Cardinal tallied 28 points in the paint to OSU’s 14.
Top performances: Wiese led all scorers with 22 points and five assists. Kolbie Orum finished with 12 points. McCall and Smith both scored nine points for Stanford.
Next up: OSU closes the regular season Sunday against California with a chance to clinch the outright Pac-12 title.
