Olympic footballer Luke Fleurs shot dead

International football is in mourning after learning of the tragic death of young Luke Fleurs. The South African footballer was shot dead in the suburbs of Johannesburg, in an incident that is still being investigated as a possible vehicle theft or attempted kidnapping.

Fleurs defended the South Africa shirt during the last Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games, starting in the three games his team played. With the senior team, however, he did not play any minutes, although he was called up on two occasions.

He currently played for Kaizer Chiefs in Johannesburg, one of the country’s main cities. Previously, he had played for Ubuntu Cape Town and SuperSport United.

His dream was to follow in the footsteps of Carles Puyol. The former Blaugrana captain was his idol since he was little, whom he met a few years ago, when Fleurs was 18 years old. The footballer then shared a photograph with his idol on Instagram, where he declared: “It was a great privilege to meet this legend on my birthday. When I was a child, he was one of the players I admired and I still admire him because when he met, he felt very honored,” Fleurs explained.
