Novak Djokovic will not play in Madrid

Serbian Novak Djokovic will not compete in the Madrid Masters 1,000, which begins next Wednesday in the men’s draw at the Caja Mágica, sources close to the player reported. After this loss, the Italian Jannik Sinner will be the top favorite of the tournament being played at the Caja Mágica.

The 36-year-old world number one has greatly limited his appearances on the circuit this season, in which he has not yet won any title nor has he played in any final.

He fell in the semifinals of the Australian Open against Sinner, in the round of 32 at Indian Wells against the Italian Luca Nardi, then 123rd in the world, and in the semifinals of Monte Carlo, last week, against the Norwegian Caspe Ruud (10).

Now he must set his sights on the Rome tournament, the only event before Roland Garros, the second Grand Slam of the year. Djokovic has played the 1,000 Madrid Masters twelve times and has won it twice, in 2011 and 2016.
