Rey Andújar’s play “Adverses” made its debut at Aguijón Theater in May 2016, but it returned as part of the seventh Destinos: Chicago International Latino Theater Festival, just in time for Día de Muertos and the upcoming national election. Directed by Marcela Muñoz and Sándor Menéndez, the play offers a modern twist on the classic story of Electra and her mother, Clytemnestra, now known as “Clitemnestra” in this adaptation.

The story revolves around themes of death, deception, vengeance, and abuse of power, as Clitemnestra, played by Kris Tori, conspires with Egisto (played by Menéndez) to kill her husband, the tyrannical leader of Palacio. Meanwhile, Electra, portrayed by Ana Santos, seeks revenge against her mother and the corrupt regime. The supporting characters, Swain (Stefanie Jara) and Helene (Haydée Delgado), navigate the treacherous waters of palace politics while trying to survive under authoritarian rule.

Andújar weaves together elements of music, comedy, and soap opera drama to delve into the complex dynamics of mother-daughter relationships and the impact of living under oppressive regimes. The performances by the cast, under the skillful direction of Muñoz and Menéndez, seamlessly blend different styles to create a thought-provoking and emotionally charged production. Santos, known for her powerful performances, delivers a captivating portrayal of Electra, showcasing her vocal talents and dramatic intensity.

In addition to its thematic depth, “Adverses” serves as a timely commentary on power dynamics and the struggle for justice in the face of tyranny. The play invites audiences to reflect on the parallels between the characters’ experiences and the challenges of confronting authority in real life. Through its engaging storytelling and dynamic performances, the production resonates with current social and political issues, making it a must-see for theater enthusiasts looking for thought-provoking performances.

Overall, “Adverses” stands out as a compelling and relevant piece of theater that offers a fresh perspective on a classic tale while addressing contemporary concerns. With its blend of dark humor, tension, and poignant moments, the play captivates audiences and sparks meaningful conversations about power, justice, and the enduring strength of the human spirit. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience this impactful production at Aguijón Theater.
