Although it was Duran’s only hit of the night, it was the hit that sealed the AL’s victory and earned him the All-Star Game MVP Award. Duran, who leads the league in doubles and triples, has been a standout player for the Red Sox this season. He has been open about his struggles with mental health in the past but has overcome them to excel on the field.
Another first-time All-Star who made an impact was Pittsburgh Pirates’ Paul Skenes, who started for the NL and pitched a hitless inning. Skenes, who has an impressive 1.90 ERA this season, showcased his talent on the big stage, setting down hitters and walking away unscathed.
While newcomers like Duran and Skenes shined, established stars like Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers also made their mark. Ohtani broke the scoreless tie with a massive home run in the third inning, showing why he is considered one of the best players in the league.
The game saw back-and-forth action, with the lead changing hands multiple times. Ultimately, it was the AL who emerged victorious, with Cleveland Guardians’ surprise All-Star David Fry contributing to the tying run before Duran’s game-winning homer.
