Mayock: T.J. Watt, brother of J.J., similar to Clay Matthews

Could the NFL club that drafts Wisconsin OLB T.J. Watt be getting the next Clay Matthews?

2017 NFL DRAFT

Watt would have to log quite a pro career to match a six-time Pro Bowler like the Green Bay Packers star, but NFL Network draft expert Mike Mayock sees the two as similar types.

"The easy comparison is Clay Matthews. He’s an edge rusher who fits best into a 3-4 system," Mayock told MMQB. "He has a similar game to Clay — an edge who can drop in coverage and has a motor that just won’t stop."

Watt began his Wisconsin career at tight end, but after overcoming injuries and a position change, he flourished as a pass-rushing linebacker in 2016. The younger brother of Houston Texans star J.J. Watt tallied 11.5 sacks among 15.5 tackles for loss to earn first-team All-Big Ten honors. Matthews has amassed 72.5 regular-season sacks in the NFL.

Looking for another potential similarity?

Matthews went late in the first round (No. 26 overall) to the Packers in 2009, and Mayock sees Watt as a potential late first-rounder in 2017.

Maybe the two players will even end up as teammates.

NFL.com analyst Daniel Jeremiah has Watt landing in Green Bay at No. 29 overall in his most recent mock draft.
