Jessica Walks First: Monday Night Foodball Recap

news-22112024-235006

Great Cloud, known as Kāēqc Anahkwat in Menominee, passed away suddenly in late September, leaving behind a legacy that his mother, Jessica Walks First, cherishes deeply. Described as having emotions as powerful as a storm cloud, Great Cloud was a father, a champion grass dancer, a tribal police officer, and a talented cook who learned the art from his mother.

Jessica Walks First, the chef behind Ketapanen Kitchen, a catering service that celebrates Indigenous cuisine, will be honoring her late son at the upcoming Monday Night Foodball event at Frank and Mary’s Tavern on November 24. Despite the lack of an official cause of death, Jessica finds solace in her work and is preparing Great Cloud’s favorite dishes for the event, with proceeds going towards his funeral expenses.

This Foodball holds special significance as it falls just before a national holiday that holds a different meaning for First Nations people. While Thanksgiving is a time of family and gratitude for many, for Native Americans, it is a time to remember and honor those who have passed on. Jessica Walks First sees this event as an opportunity to honor her son and celebrate his life with the community.

The menu for the evening includes bison brisket platter with Bannock roll, smoked cactus pear or blueberry barbecue sauce, elote pasta salad, and Menominee maple baked beans. Guests are invited to join Ketapanen Kitchen at 2905 N. Elston in Avondale starting at 5 PM until the food runs out.

In addition to honoring Great Cloud, this event showcases the rich tapestry of Indigenous cuisine and culture, providing a platform for Jessica Walks First to share her heritage and culinary skills with the community. The Monday Night Foodball series, curated by Mike Sula, offers a space for emerging chefs to showcase their talents and create connections with diners.

As we approach this event, let us remember the power of food to bring people together, heal wounds, and celebrate life. Through the flavors and stories shared at Monday Night Foodball, we can honor the memory of Great Cloud and continue to support Jessica Walks First in her journey of healing and remembrance. Join us for a night of delicious food, community, and reflection as we come together to celebrate the life and legacy of a beloved son, father, and chef.
