Jana Kinsman, a multi-talented individual, has made a name for herself as a beekeeper, illustrator, and entrepreneur in Chicago. Her journey began with a fascination for beekeeping, leading her to start Bike a Bee, a project that spreads beehives throughout the city. She operates out of the Plant in the Back of the Yards, where she conducts honey extraction and builds equipment. Jana sells her honey both online and at the 61st Street Farmers Market in Woodlawn. Alongside her beekeeping endeavors, she also runs Doodlebooth, a hand-drawn portrait service for weddings, markets, and events. Over the span of 13 years, Jana has crafted a life that aligns with the changing seasons.

Originally a graphic designer immersed in the corporate world, Jana found inspiration from the creative community around her, propelling her to venture into creating products with her own hands. Her interest in nature, coupled with a failed relationship with someone pursuing an urban homestead lifestyle, led her to explore urban beekeeping. After taking a winter beekeeping class in Chicago, Jana’s passion for bees blossomed, eventually leading her to embark on a beekeeping apprenticeship in Portland, Oregon.

Jana’s unique approach to beekeeping, which involves transporting equipment and tending to the hives on her bike, has garnered attention and sparked interest in the communities where she places her hives. By hosting hives in community gardens around the south side of Chicago, Jana not only enriches the lives of residents but also offers them a taste of honey made in their own neighborhood. Each neighborhood’s apiary produces honey with distinct flavors based on the plants the bees visit, creating a unique representation of the area.

In addition to her beekeeping work, Jana operates Doodlebooth, providing event attendees with quick hand-drawn portraits. This business, along with her construction work at the Renaissance Society, has helped support her beekeeping endeavors financially. Jana’s journey into self-employment has been marked by a willingness to embrace new opportunities and constantly evolve her skills and interests.

As Jana continues to navigate the challenges and rewards of beekeeping, she also finds fulfillment in rehabbing her house in West Englewood. The process of renovating the property has allowed her to engage with her passion for hands-on work and craftsmanship. Despite the unpredictable nature of beekeeping and the seasonal rhythm it entails, Jana thrives on the ever-changing experiences and the opportunity to slow down time through her diverse pursuits.

Through her dedication to beekeeping, illustration, and entrepreneurship, Jana Kinsman epitomizes the spirit of creativity, community engagement, and lifelong learning. Her story serves as a testament to the transformative power of pursuing one’s passions and embracing the unexpected twists and turns of life.
