William Parker, Hamid Drake, and Cooper-Moore, known as the Heart Trio, have recently released their debut album. This trio has a long history of collaboration, with Parker and Drake establishing themselves as a dynamic drummer-and-bassist team in the world of free-leaning jazz. Cooper-Moore, a pianist and instrument inventor, has been working with Parker for even longer, and together they form the core of Parker’s band, In Order to Survive.

While Cooper-Moore typically plays keyboards in In Order to Survive, in the Heart Trio, all three musicians set aside their familiar instruments to explore a new sound. Parker plays the donso ngoni, a West African harplike instrument, as well as the bass duduk and a variety of flutes from different cultures. Drake focuses on the frame drum and a smaller drum kit, while Cooper-Moore showcases two of his own handmade instruments: a hoe-handle harp and an 11-tone xylophone called the ashimba.

The trio’s music is not about recreating traditional styles from various cultures; instead, they use these instruments as a way to tap into their creativity and create a unique sound. Their performances are filled with relaxed rhythms, intricate melodies, and hypnotic vibes that transport listeners to a different world.

The Heart Trio will be performing at Hungry Brain on Saturday, October 19th. This is a concert that should not be missed, as it promises to be a musical journey like no other. Grab your tickets and get ready to experience the tranquil transcendence of William Parker, Hamid Drake, and Cooper-Moore.

In addition to the upcoming Heart Trio performance, there are also other exciting concerts to look out for in the coming weeks.
