Serena Madrigal, a talented multidisciplinary artist based in Chicago and Sacramento, has a unique approach to her floral creations. Unlike many others, she prefers to leave the thorns on her roses, seeing the contrast between their softness and sharp edges as a symbol of beauty and protection.
Madrigal’s artistic journey is deeply rooted in her challenging upbringing. Raised in foster care for 12 years before being adopted by her mother, she found solace in plants and flowers. Despite financial struggles causing constant relocations, Madrigal’s mother always managed to bring life to their surroundings with thriving gardens.
Upon moving to Chicago to study social work, Madrigal unexpectedly rediscovered her love for flowers while working at a farmers’ market and later at a grocery store. This reconnection sparked her passion for floral design, leading her to create unique arrangements that blend nostalgia, romance, culture, and modernity.
Under the name Espinas, meaning “thorns,” Madrigal has turned her deep connection to flowers into a successful artistic practice. She has worked on weddings, special events, and collaborations with brands like Aesop and Herradura Tequila. Her work often challenges traditional boundaries by using unconventional materials and incorporating cannabis flowers into her designs.
For Madrigal, cannabis holds a special significance beyond its aesthetic appeal. As a regular user, she advocates for its health and wellness benefits while raising awareness about the impact of the war on drugs, particularly on communities of color. Through her art, she aims to educate others and destigmatize the use of cannabis.
Collaboration plays a significant role in Madrigal’s work, with her best friend and fellow artist, Ambercita, being a frequent partner. Together, they have exhibited their creations and celebrated Chicano culture through shared experiences. While focusing on collaborations, Madrigal is also preparing for a solo show, waiting for the right moment to showcase her intentional and meaningful artistry.
Madrigal’s story is one of resilience, creativity, and community. Despite facing challenges and setbacks, she has blossomed into a talented artist who draws inspiration from her roots and experiences. Like the rose she cherishes, Madrigal’s journey reflects growth and beauty emerging from adversity.
