Madrigal’s artistic journey is deeply rooted in her personal history. Growing up in foster care for 12 years before being adopted by her mother, Debbie, Madrigal faced many challenges. Despite the hardships, her mother’s love for plants and flowers created a sense of consistency and beauty in their lives. This early exposure to nature laid the foundation for Madrigal’s future connection to flowers and plants.
After moving to Chicago to pursue a degree in social work, Madrigal’s passion for flowers was reignited when she started working at a farmers’ market flower stand. This eventually led to a role as the floral department lead at a grocery store, where she began creating stunning flower arrangements for special occasions. Drawing on her resourcefulness and creativity, Madrigal transforms simple materials into captivating floral designs that redefine the boundaries of traditional floral artistry.
Madrigal’s work, under the name Espinas, meaning “thorns,” reflects her deep connection to nature and her commitment to using flowers as a medium for artistic expression. Through collaborations with various brands and artists, Madrigal aims to educate others on the benefits of cannabis and incorporate the plant into her floral designs. As a regular cannabis user herself, she believes in the plant’s ability to promote health and wellness.
Collaboration plays a significant role in Madrigal’s artistic practice, with her best friend and fellow artist, Ambercita, being a consistent collaborator. Together, they have worked on various projects that celebrate Chicano culture and community. While Madrigal is currently focused on collaborating and networking, she looks forward to hosting a solo show in the future, where she can showcase her intentional and meaningful artistry.
