Coalesce Metalcore Icons Return Older & Wiser – Chicago Reader

In the early 2000s, when I first discovered hardcore music, I heard stories about the legendary metalcore band Coalesce and their intense live performances. These tales seemed plausible after I listened to their 1998 album, Functioning on Impatience, which showcases front man Shawn Ingram’s powerful vocals alongside heavy riffs from guitarist Jes Steineger and bassist Nathan Ellis.

Coalesce’s music is a unique blend of dark humor and apocalyptic textures, setting them apart from other metalcore bands of the late 90s. They even released a Led Zeppelin covers EP in 1999 and gave their songs amusing titles like “Cowards.com” and “Where the Hell Is Rick Thorne These Days?” which influenced other genres like mall emo.

Over the years, Coalesce faced internal conflicts but managed to reunite in 2010 before taking a hiatus to focus on their personal lives. After reuniting in 2024 for Furnace Fest and a U.S. tour, the band seems closer than ever. They recently reissued their full-length albums on vinyl and announced plans for a new album, the first since 2009.

With drummer Jeff Gensterblum (Small Brown Bike) joining the lineup, recent concert footage shows that Coalesce is still as explosive on stage, though perhaps less likely to throw instruments into the crowd. Their upcoming performance at Beat Kitchen on December 6th is a must-see for fans of hardcore music.

In addition to their musical endeavors, the band members have also revealed a personal side, with Ingram mentioning that they all spend Christmas together. This sense of camaraderie and shared experiences has strengthened their bond over the years.

As Coalesce continues to evolve and grow, their legacy in the metalcore scene remains strong. Fans can look forward to new music and electrifying performances from these seasoned veterans of the genre.
