Raven Theatre is currently showcasing Martyna Majok’s Ironbound, which is being billed as a Chicago premiere. This play brings back memories of a workshop production from ten years ago in Steppenwolf Theatre’s First Look Repertory program. Majok, a University of Chicago graduate, did some early work in Chicago before winning the Pulitzer Prize for Cost of Living in 2018. Under Georgette Verdin’s direction, Ironbound feels right at home in Chicago, despite being set at a bus stop in a desolate area of Newark, New Jersey.
The story follows Darja (played by Lucy Carapetyan), an immigrant from Poland who works in a paper factory and as a house cleaner, similar to Majok’s own mother’s experiences. The play moves back and forth in time at the bus stop, showing Darja’s struggles and resilience as her fortunes fluctuate. Despite facing challenges, Darja maintains her pride and determination.
Ironbound skillfully portrays the larger social framework of Darja’s life without getting lost in polemics. The play reveals snippets of information about Darja’s relationships, including her first husband Maks (Nate Santana) and her abusive second husband. Through encounters with characters like Vic (played by Glenn Obrero), the play highlights the importance of kindness and human connection in the face of adversity.
