Teatro Tariakuri’s latest production, El Piélago de las Calamidades, meaning “a sea of calamities” in English, offers a unique twist on the classic story of Hamlet. Directed by Karla Galván, the play follows a group of traveling actors who are hired by Hamlet to reenact the story of his father’s murder. The show, presented as part of the seventh Destinos: Chicago International Latino Theater Festival, embraces the commedia dell’arte performance style and theatrical archetypes.

The cast includes Eugene, played by Esteban Pantoja, Laura portrayed by Nancy Mata, Ana played by Daniela Aranda, and Henrik by Manuel Duarte. Each character brings a different dynamic to the group, with Henrik stealing the scene with an oversized skull. The actors are so engrossed in their own dramas that they fail to realize the parallels between the play they are performing and the events unfolding in the castle.

As the actors grapple with their own fates, the play takes a poignant turn, exploring themes of fame and fortune. Patricia Galván’s musical performances add depth to the show, balancing the bawdy elements with moments of insight into the characters’ desires. The play pays homage to the Mexican tradition of carpa, featuring traveling bands of artists playing stock characters.

In addition to El Piélago de las Calamidades, Chicago’s theater scene offers a diverse range of performances for audiences to enjoy. From Blue Eyed Soul Sung by Brown Eyed People to Alabama Story and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, there is something for everyone in the city’s vibrant theater community. The production of Fidelio at Lyric and Light Switch’s exploration of queerness and neurodiversity further showcase the depth and variety of theatrical experiences available in Chicago.

With a rich history of storytelling and a commitment to showcasing diverse voices, Chicago’s theater scene continues to captivate audiences and push boundaries. Whether you’re a fan of classic plays reimagined or new works that challenge the status quo, there is no shortage of talent and creativity to be found on stage in the Windy City. So, grab a ticket, take a seat, and immerse yourself in the world of theater in Chicago.
