“The team is in the round of 16, where it deserves.” These were the words of João Cancelo, after Xavi’s team certified this Tuesday his passage to the round of 16 of the Champions League against Porto (2-1). A “liberation” for the Terrassa coach, not only sporting, but also economic for the coffers of the Blaugrana entity.

The victory against the Portuguese represents a sum of 2.8 million for the victory and 9.6 for certifying the pass to the first round of the highest European competition. A total of 12.4 million that must be added to the 58.15 that Barça already has insured for different reasons.

Firstly, for their historical ranking in the Champions League (34.11 million), playing in the group stage (15.64) and for the first three victories achieved in the league, which represent a total of 8.4 million (2.8 per match). The balance so far is 70.55 million euros.

However, the figure could rise if the culé team leaves rivals behind and advances to the next round in the Champions League. European teams not only receive financial bonuses for each victory, but also for each draw (930,000 euros).

A smaller amount, if we have as a reference the champion of the ‘orejona’ who takes 20 million euros or the runner-up of the European tournament with 15.5. If they say goodbye to the Champions League in the semi-finals, Barça would secure 12.5 million euros. On the contrary, 10.6 if they remain in the quarterfinals or 9.6 if they do not go beyond the second round.

In addition to all this, the income from the market pool would be missing, a system that allocates an amount of money to each country based on its value as a television market for the Champions League. The draw for the round of 16 of the top European competition will take place next Monday, December 18.

At the ceremony, Barça will be able to find out their next rival in the Champions League – the group stage will end on December 13 – and what their destiny may hold not only on the playing field, but also in the financial sphere.
