Art Design Chicago is a vibrant arts initiative that aims to showcase local perspectives and histories through a diverse range of exhibitions and events. Launched in November 2023 by the Terra Foundation for American Art in collaboration with local artists and arts institutions, this initiative celebrates the past, present, and future of Chicago’s art scene.
With over 75 arts and culture spaces participating in the initiative, Art Design Chicago provides a platform for both established institutions like the Newberry Library and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, as well as community-based organizations such as the American Indian Center and the South Asia Institute. By supporting a wide range of partners, Art Design Chicago offers a comprehensive view of the city’s rich artistic landscape.
One of the key goals of Art Design Chicago is to make the local arts scene more accessible and inclusive. The majority of the exhibitions are free to attend, and the initiative works closely with organizations focused on nurturing young talent, such as My Block My Hood My City and Project Osmosis. By engaging with diverse communities and offering a wide range of programming, Art Design Chicago strives to ensure that art is for everyone.
Currently, there are several exciting exhibitions to explore as part of Art Design Chicago. The Center for Native Futures is showcasing Gagizhibaajiwan, featuring the work of four Anishinaabe artists, while the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum is hosting Radical Craft, a celebration of immigrant artists and educators. Additionally, the Smart Museum is presenting Give the Drummer Some!, a unique installation by south-side artist Robert Earl Paige.
As we enter the fall and holiday season, now is the perfect time to immerse yourself in the local art, culture, and history that Art Design Chicago has to offer.
