The latest episode of HBO’s long-standing series “Hard Knocks” aired on July 2, focusing on the New York Giants’ offseason. The episode stirred up conversations, particularly around the departure of Saquon Barkley, the former Giants running back who was drafted in 2018. Despite the significance of Barkley’s departure from the Giants, he found a new home with their division rival, the Philadelphia Eagles, much to the disappointment of Giants fans.

The show provided viewers with a glimpse into the Giants’ decision-making process regarding Barkley’s future with the team. In one clip, members of the Giants front office discussed the challenges they would face if they were to trade Barkley after placing the franchise tag on him.

Eagles’ star wide receiver A.J. Brown expressed his displeasure with how things unfolded for Barkley in New York. Brown took to social media to show support for Barkley, stating, “The Saquon video fired me up and it wasn’t even about me. I’m going to do everything in my power to make sure you get yours fam! @saquon.”

In April, Brown signed a three-year contract extension worth an estimated $96 million, becoming the highest-paid player in his position at the time. This deal was later surpassed by Justin Jefferson’s historic extension in June.

Giants general manager Joe Schoen shed light on the team’s strategy, emphasizing the need to invest in upgrading the offensive line and questioning the viability of paying Barkley a hefty annual salary. Schoen’s focus was on quarterback Daniel Jones, expressing the importance of supporting him as the team’s primary player.

Barkley disclosed in May that he never received an offer to return to the Giants, contradicting a video trailer released in June that suggested otherwise. The trailer hinted at a conversation between Schoen and Barkley regarding his future with the team.

Ultimately, Barkley signed a three-year, $37.75 million deal with the Eagles in March, solidifying his move from the Giants to their division rival.

This season, “Hard Knocks” will feature three different versions, including the Giants offseason, the Chicago Bears training camp, and a unique focus on all four teams in the AFC North throughout the regular season in “Hard Knocks: In Season.”
