Aigües de Barcelona (Agbar) and the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell collaborate to promote the Conde de Godó Trophy as an international benchmark in the sustainable management and respect for the environment of a sporting event. Currently, the tennis competition is being held from April 13 to next Sunday, April 21.

Like every year, the sporting event together with Aigües de Barcelona works on a plan to promote sustainability during the tournament, and thus reduce its environmental impact. In this edition, which commemorates the 125th anniversary of the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona-1899, the main novelty is the gray and rainwater reuse project.

With the advice of Aigües de Barcelona, the tennis club has built a plant that collects wastewater from the club’s locker rooms. Through membrane treatment, this project allows water to be regenerated for different uses such as irrigation of the tennis courts and the green areas of the facility.

As Agbar explained in a statement, this initiative will contribute to reducing the tournament’s water footprint and reusing 100% of the club’s gray water.

In turn, the company will install tap water distribution points and distribute reusable water bottles to all participants and attendees of the sporting event, to minimize waste generation.

Therefore, the company will collaborate for another year in the calculation of the carbon footprint and the water footprint. In this way, you will be able to continue implementing the sustainability plan for future editions of the tournament in a targeted manner.

On the other hand, the alliance between Agbar and the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell has also been developed in other actions during the tournament. For example, at the Play for the Planet conference on Sustainability in major sporting events.

In this event, representatives of Aigües de Barcelona, America’s Cup, Infinite Athletic and the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona itself have shown how the positive impact of sporting events can be maximized at an environmental, social, etc. level.

In recent years, the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell has implemented measures that have positioned it as a benchmark sporting event in sustainable management.

That is why in 2018, the tournament received the ISO 20121 sustainable event management certificate. As well as the distinction of Barcelona Biosphere in 2019 for its commitment to the city’s tourism sustainability.

The collaboration of Aigües de Barcelona in this sporting event aims to contribute to the ecological transition and move towards climate neutrality of its emissions in the year 2050.

Due to the company’s actions and strategies to mitigate the harmful effects of climate change, Agbar has received recognition from the International Water Association (IWA) as a “Climate Smart Utility” in 2022.
