The entry of a polar air mass and the Julliet storm are leaving freezing temperatures, very cold and snow in a large part of the country, also in the city of Barcelona. Since Sunday afternoon, it has snowed in the mountainous areas of Barcelona, ??in places like Sierra de Collserola and Tibidabo, some four hundred meters above the sea.
The Meteorological Service of Catalonia (Meteocat) has reported on Twitter about snowfall in several parts of Barcelona. For example, in the Fabra Astronomy Observatory. Despite the precipitation in the form of snow, no large accumulations have been recorded: “During this morning, in some places between three and five centimeters of snow have accumulated, for example in Begues or at the Fabra observatory”, according to Civil Protection .
Although for a good part of the day the snow has not returned to make an appearance in the Catalan capital, the authorities have kept the alert phase of the Special Emergency Plan for Snowfall (Neucat) activated in view of the snowfall forecasts on the coast and the central precoastal of Catalonia.
Already this Monday afternoon, before the return of the precipitations, the Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya has pointed out that “it continues to precipitate very weakly in points of the central coast/pre-coastal” and has established the snow level for the next few hours from of 200 meters above sea level.
The meteocat has also reported that in the next few hours, already at dawn on Tuesday, “the precipitation will also spread to the regions of Girona, especially the Alt Empordà”. In this case, the snow level has also been above 200 meters, although it could be lower in the Alt Empordà.
For its part, the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has kept the yellow warning active on the Barcelona coast due to “accumulation of snow in 24 hours: 2 centimeters” and “above 200 meters”, although “mainly in El Garraf and Baix Llobregat”. In addition to the province of Barcelona, ??snowfall has been forecast in some of the Tarragona regions.
This Monday has also been very cold in Barcelona. The forecasts this morning were for a minimum temperature of five degrees and the maximum would not exceed 11, well below the usual records.
Barcelona is one of the provinces where the yellow warning has been activated due to the entry of the Juliet storm and a polar air mass that is leaving locally strong or persistent rainfall on Monday in the Balearic Islands, snowfall in areas of the northern third of the peninsula and a decrease in Generalized temperatures in the peninsula and the Balearic Islands.
In the case of Mallorca, the Juliette storm has left an accumulation of at least half a meter of snow in the Serra de Tramuntana, where the red warning (extreme risk) is activated due to snowfall, while in Palma it could snow but it is not expected set.
Precipitation in the form of snow has begun to be recorded since early this Monday on the island, at levels from 800 meters, and even 400 meters (in Galilee and Valldemossa) or 300 meters (Orient).
For its part, the Alava port of Herrera, in the Basque Country, has been temporarily closed to traffic due to snow, six mountain passes on the La Rioja secondary road network have also been closed due to snow on the road and the snow has also affected to more than twenty highways in Castilla y León. One more example that the rainfall is hitting a good part of the Peninsula.
