As Spain prepares for the Christmas Eve and Christmas holidays, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) predicts important changes in the weather. After a period of anticyclonic stability, where the cold has been the protagonist, it is expected that the arrival of a trough could bring with it an Isolated Depression at High Levels (DANA), which will be characterized by heavy rains.

This possibility represents a before and after compared to current conditions, in which temperatures have dropped to unusually low levels for the time, especially at night.

Aemet experts point out that, although the last few weeks have been dry, with significant snowfall only in the Pyrenees, the situation is about to change. The current anticyclone, described as an “Atlantic pressure cooker”, has kept the rains at bay, but its influence will diminish by the middle of next week. Therefore, the arrival of a front, accompanied by a trough, is expected to bring rain to northern Spain and possibly to the center.

In addition, the possibility of a DANA breaking out within the trough could cause more intense rain and, in certain areas, snowfall. These conditions are expected to mainly affect the Cantabrian Mountains and the central system, where snowfall could reach levels of 900 meters starting on Wednesday. However, after this episode, the return of the anticyclone is expected, which would cause the rainfall to subside.

Meanwhile, during this weekend and the days before Christmas, stable weather is forecast, without rain or snow, in most of Spain. Frosts and morning fogs will be frequent, especially in the interior of the peninsula. In regions like Castilla y León, persistent and freezing fogs are expected. Aemet highlights that, despite these changes, temperatures will remain within typical ranges for the time of year.
