The head of the PP list in Badalona (Barcelona), Xavier García Albiol, has been invested this afternoon as the new mayor of the city by an absolute majority thanks to the 18 votes of his formation, out of a total of 27 councilors who make up the municipal plenary . The rest of the parties -PSC, ERC, Badalona En Comú Podem and Guanyem Badalona- have declined to present an alternative candidacy, for which they have added 9 blank votes.

Xavier García Albiol has been chosen as the first mayor of the Barcelona city for the third time, since he was already mayor between 2011 and 2015, and between 2020 and 2021, although this is the first time where he leads the municipality with an absolute majority. Albiol recovers the baton of command after a motion of no confidence removed him from office and he was replaced by the socialist Rubén Guijarro, who led a coalition government that also included the Republicans, the Commons and JxCat.

While the plenary session has been held, more than a hundred citizens have followed it from a giant screen installed at the door of the consistory. The public has booed several of the opposition politicians, especially former mayors Rubén Guijarro (PSC) and Dolors Sabater (Guanyem). The person who has received applause from those gathered in the square has been Xavier García Albiol, who has been sworn in as mayor visibly moved, and who has been shouted “mayor, mayor”.
