White House: Top NSC official implicated in John Bolton book controversy

Knight will be returning to her position as senior director for records and access at the NSC.

Knight was responsible for the prepublication review and classification of Bolton’s memoir, “The Room Where It Happened”, which was published in January 2017. She detailed in a court file in 2020 “unprecedented” involvement of White House appointees who “commandeered [what is supposed to] be an apolitical proces.”

Emily Horne, NSC spokesperson, stated that Ellen Knight is a dedicated career public servicer. “We are grateful to have her back to the National Security Council, as the Senior Director of Records, Access, and Information Security Management, and to benefit from her vast experience in classified information management.”

Bolton was sued by the Trump administration over his book. Bolton claimed publication of the book would compromise national security information. Simon & Schuster, a division Paramount Global, published the book.

Bolton applauded Knight’s return in a statement.

He said Wednesday that he applauded the White House’s decision to reinstate Ellen Knight, NSC senior director. Trump’s disgraceful firing Ms. Knight is yet another stain on the presidency. Trump’s personal vendetta should be brought to the attention of those in the White House Counsel’s Office and NSC.
