The sentence of the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC) that condemns Laura Borrà s will have no effect on the organizational chart of Together for Catalonia. “We will not waste a single minute talking about Junts, nor will it affect our political life”, said the formation’s general secretary, Jordi Turull, yesterday, after publicly expressing his support for the party’s president and affirming which is a “manual” lawfare case.
According to Turull, it is an “unjust sentence because the instruction and the trial have been unfair”. With this axiom, and with the addition that the sentence is not final, the leader avoided assessing the content related to corruption in the resolution. “We will not evaluate paragraphs”, he stressed. “We must all respect all procedures. There are people who skipped the class where the presumption of innocence was explained,” he added.
In the party statutes approved last summer, it is indicated that until the judgment is final, that is to say of the Supreme Court, the internal guarantee bodies must not assess whether it is a case of lawfare or not , and what consequences or sanctions must be faced by a conviction for crimes related to corruption, which are classified in the section of “very serious offences”.
Taking advantage of this reasoning, the leader of JxCat considered that it is not possible to make the sentence, without it being final, “have effects”, especially when Borrà s has already announced that he will appeal to other judicial authorities.
Thus, the leader of the ranks of the post-convergents tried to close any debate about the president of the party, despite the fact that this does not mean that Borrà s does not have detractors within Junts. But the truth is that, with the May 28 municipal elections around the corner, addressing Borrà s’ situation within the party is not an ideal situation and, for now, this debate has been postponed.
In any case, faced with a sentence of four and a half years in prison – with the inclusion of a request for pardon to prevent him from going to prison -, there are those who see it more complicated that later on there is some movement to part of these sectors who consider that the president should resign from her positions in the direction of the party so as not to harm the project.
Figs from another bread is what can happen in Parliament. Turull yesterday avoided commenting on what steps they will take in this area beyond trying to prevent “interference” from the Electoral Board. But, at the same time, it did not feed voices like that of Aurora Madaula or that of ex-president Quim Torra – both very close to the president -, who advocate not to aspire to the presidency of the Chamber and leave the seat of you will erase “Arriving at this stage, the party bodies will adopt the decisions that have to be taken”, asserted Turull. “We will not talk about substitutions until we see each other in a scenario of substitutions, and the decisions will be made in the party bodies”, he reiterated.
In the ranks of the more pragmatic sector, they believe that, if they manage to change the course to Catalan and recover this institutional figure, the role of the president of the training will gradually lose strength.
