Jovent Republicanà, the Juventudes de Esquerra, and the Joventut Nacionalista de Catalunya (JNC), from Junts, have taken to Twitter for the conviction of Laura Borràs for the crimes of prevarication and document falsification. The republicans have published a meme with the photo of the Junts leader, with the text ‘La Madrina’, alluding to the movie The Godfather. The JNC immediately responded by reminding that in Catalan it is called “padrina” and accused ERC of not defending Catalan.
Just as the sentence was announced, Jovent Republicà uploaded the aforementioned meme -with the typography and symbol of the American film- and accompanied it with the phrase “For some Catalan Countries free of corruption”. “In Catalan it is called godmother. You don’t even defend Catalan by making memes,” the Junts youth sector responded.
The controversy between both organizations has come after the sentence of the suspended president of Parliament, Laura Borràs. The Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia has sentenced her to four and a half years in prison and absolute disqualification for prevarication and document falsification for irregularities in the awarding of contracts while she directed the Institució de les Lletres Catalanes (ILC) (2013-2017 ). At the same time, the judges propose that the Government apply a partial pardon to prevent her from going to prison.
According to the TSJC ruling, Borràs divided eighteen contracts, when he was in charge of the ILC to award them by hand to a friend, Isaías Herrero, for maintenance work on the institution’s web portal without having to go through a public tender.
