The appeal to the useful vote of the non-independence centre-right, Daniel Sirera’s mantra throughout the campaign, took effect and the PP prevailed with four councilors over the other forces in its political spectrum, Citizens and Valents, who have left out of the Barcelona City Council.
But, on the far right of the galaxy, Vox has broken in with two councilors, which is why the result is bittersweet for the popular candidate, who was looking for the key to governance and will see his management conditioned by the rivalry with the ultras . As much as they want to make necessity a virtue when they say that the presence of Vox focuses the PP more, the popular people would have preferred that the party of Santiago Abascal had not entered.
From the Avenida Palace hotel, where they celebrated election night, Sirera’s team began cautiously and limited themselves to affirming that the PP would be the protagonist of a change in the city, but they became more animated as the scrutiny progressed and its four councilors prevailed over the two of Gonzalo de Oro, the Vox candidate, making the desire to “grow to be decisive” and “govern Barcelona very soon” more feasible.
“We have been left with a councilor from ERC, which is the one that governs the Generalitat. From tomorrow I will start working to get the PP to govern one day in Catalonia too”, proclaimed Sirera, who was received with a lot of applause and with the usual tone of the PP at its full-scale meetings.
The mayor began by thanking the support of the 80,000 Barcelona residents who trusted the PP, more than twice as much as in previous elections. “We did it, in the end we did it”, said the popular candidate, who congratulated himself that the PP had returned to Barcelona “with strength”.
“Only eight months ago the polls said that the PP would be left without representation in the City Council. And in just four months we have doubled the representation”, exclaimed Sirera, happy. “The PP is back and it’s back with gusto, with four councilors who will give their skins to achieve change in Barcelona”, he added.
“We are the main force of constitutionalism in Barcelona”, he finished with a wink at the voters of Ciutadans i Valents, which the PP aspires to represent from now on.
