The Popular Party of the Region of Murcia has nailed the polls that gave it a comfortable majority that will allow them, in all probability, to govern alone. With 85% of the votes counted, the PP won the elections in a politically troubled autonomous community, which has suffered important ups and downs in the previous legislature. Among them, recent cases of corruption carried out by two former regional presidents of the PP.

Yesterday’s victory at the polls will lead the PP candidate, Fernando López Miras, to lead the community of Murcia, after the PP is only two deputies away from obtaining an absolute majority. It will be the eighth consecutive regional government in conservative hands. Thus, of the 45 deputies who will sit in the regional parliament, 21 are, for now, from the Popular Party, 5 more than in the previous legislature, 12 from the PSOE, which loses 5 seats, 9 from Vox, compared to 4 who obtained the last elections, and 2 from Unidas Podemos, which repeats the result. The most notable novelty is the entry into parliament of Movimiento Ciudadano, a Cartagena party that debuts with a deputy.

Ciudadanos has lost the six seats that the previous legislature won and has been left without representation after starring in one of the biggest political scandals to hit the national scene. In March 2021, the orange formation disintegrated in Murcia after three of its deputies supported, along with three others from VOX, the president of the community, Fernando López Miras, who faced a motion of censure presented by the PSOE .

Fernando López Miras, who will repeat as regional president, has had a recurring theme in his favor, which is none other than the water policy and the cut in the transfer. In addition, he started a tax reduction policy some time ago, such as inheritance tax, which has had a very positive effect on the electorate. For this reason, Miras has achieved more support than the sum of all the leftist parties, which initially would allow him to govern without having to resort to pacts with other political formations.

The PSOE, winner of the 2019 event, despite the fact that the PP took the presidency from it, lost yesterday, perhaps due to the little pull of its head of the list, the former delegate of the Government of Spain in the region, José Vélez, accused of a alleged crime of prevarication. Podemos drops a deputy with respect to the polls, which gave him 3, and Vox, with José Antelo at the helm, grows to 9 deputies. The PP, in addition, has won in the three municipalities with the greatest weight in the Region: Murcia, Cartagena and Lorca.
