The Basque Government has stood up to the campaign of “insults and threats” against the actress Itziar Ituño, after participating in a demonstration called by Sare “against the penitentiary exceptionality that is applied to Basque prisoners.” The Basque Executive has considered these insults against the Basque actress “inadmissible”, who has also received support from the ranks of Podemos, Sumar and EH Bildu.
These insults and threats against Ituño, expressed through social networks, have been repeated in the last three days, after on Saturday he participated in the march called in Bilbao by Sare, which brought together several tens of thousands of people. The objective of the demonstration was to “demand that the policy of exception” imposed on ETA prisoners be ended and “ordinary legislation be applied to begin a new stage.”
“Thousands of people of different ideologies have gathered again in the streets of Bilbao, thousands of keys for resolution. To close the doors of the past and open the doors of the future. Claiming that it is time to end the exceptional measures” , claimed from the group coordinated by former EA leader Joseba Azkarraga.
Itziar Ituño, like other well-known people, agreed to appear in the front row of the demonstration, a fact that in the following hours has been used to insult her and, especially, to seek professional punishment for the actress. The brands with which she has had advertising contracts, such as Iberia or the BMW Norauto dealerships, have ended up giving in and have “ceased their collaborations.”
Meanwhile, from the Basque Government, Bingen Zupiria, its spokesperson and Minister of Culture and Linguistic Policy, has considered the insults and anonymous comments against the actress “inadmissible.”
As indicated, the Bilnbao march complied with all legal requirements and has vindicated the right of citizens to “participation and free expression of opinions, which must be safeguarded and guaranteed above all things.”
“Criticism is democratic and legitimate, but it must occur within reasonable and acceptable frameworks. When it becomes an insult or threat it has no place in society,” he warned.
Likewise, the former leader of Podemos Pablo Iglesias, the former spokesperson for the party in Congress Pablo Echenique and the deputy of the Sumar group, Íñigo Errejón, have also shown their “support and solidarity” to Ituño, after the criticism that the interpreter of ‘La casa de papel’ for attending a demonstration last Saturday for the rights of ETA prisoners.
“With Itziar Ituño, with the right to free expression and for moving forward in resolving the consequences of the conflict,” Errejón said in his ‘X’ profile.
In this sense, Pablo Iglesias has alluded to the owners of BMW and has assured that the origin of their wealth comes from “their links with the Nazis.” The Quandts, owners of BMW, are one of the richest families in Germany. As researcher Joachim Scholtyseck demonstrated, the origin of his wealth comes from his ties to the Nazis. All my solidarity with Itziar Ituño”, he has indicated in ‘X’.
Echenique has also linked the brand with Nazism by sharing Iglesias’ message and publishing a message that says: “BMW: ‘We are not linked to any political ideology but we amassed our obscene amount of money thanks to Adolf Hitler.’ All support to Itziar Ituño”, he stated in ‘X’.
From EH Bildu, the spokesperson for the nationalist coalition in Congress, Mertxe Aizpurua, has also criticized the campaign against Ituño and recalled that the motivation for the march was “to denounce penitentiary exceptionalism.”
