This Thursday’s day in Congress has brought about a breakdown in voting discipline in Sumar. It has been the deputy, and former ambassador of Spain to the UN, Agustín Santos Maraver, who has not supported his colleagues to demand that the Government “suspend diplomatic relations with Israel until the offensive on Gaza and the West Bank ceases” promoted by Podemos .

This action by Santos, however, does not open any gap since it had already been debated and accepted by the parliamentary group, understanding that it is due to the actions of the deputy during his career as a diplomat.

The plurinational group led by Yolanda Díaz has voted in favor of the seven points of the non-law proposal of those of Ione Belarra, of which only one has passed, the one that advocated “redoubling efforts to achieve the opening of corridors and the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza, including coordination at the European level for the joint delivery of aid and its airdrop over the Strip.

The PSOE, for its part, has prevented with its votes the approval of the initiative to suspend “diplomatic relations with Israel.” Although it has supported the “immediate suspension of the arms trade with Israel” and “promoting within the European Union the adoption of a total arms embargo on Israel throughout the community territory.”

He has also voted in favor of “promoting within the European Union the adoption of exemplary economic sanctions against those responsible for the crimes committed in Gaza – and throughout Palestine – since October 7, including Israeli government authorities and settlers.” of illegal settlements” and to “support the investigation by the Prosecutor’s Office of the International Criminal Court of the crimes committed in Gaza and the West Bank since October 7, and the accountability processes of those responsible before the Court.”

However, Sumar, as his deputy Tesh Sidi already advanced in Tuesday’s debate, supported all the points: the integrity of his deputies did so with six of the seven sections, and all except Santos Maraver the breaking of relations with Israel. Yolanda Díaz’s party had already spoken out on other occasions in favor of the measures that Podemos requested, but never until now for the breaking of diplomatic relations.

The general secretary of Podemos, Ione Belarra, in statements in the Congress courtyard at the end of the vote, has “deeply regretted that the Popular Party, Vox and junts Ian boycotted the initiative” and at the same time welcomes that the PSOE “has voted for favor of the arms embargo”, a support from which he deduced that “in the coming days the Government of Spain will agree to the suspension of the sale and transport of weapons that are passing through our country towards Israel”. Regarding Sumar’s support for the breakup of relations with the exception of Santos, she limited herself to responding that this issue “is assessed on its own.”
