If the chances of an agreement were measured based on the previous statements, at the meeting to which the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, and the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, were summoned this morning, in Congress, there there is little chance of agreement. Especially for the topics that will be discussed at the meeting. While the Government insists on addressing the renewal of the Council, the president of the PP wants to talk “about the country” and its problems.
In addition, if there was a desire to agree, the criticisms would have been lowered yesterday, but the Prime Minister, visiting Barcelona to meet with Pere Aragonès, criticized Feijóo for the meeting to be in Congress, “a thing unpublished”. From the PP, however, it is remembered that Feijóo did not impose anything, and it was Sánchez himself who told him from the podium of the Congress that he would hold the meeting “where he wants, when he wants and how he wants”, and the president of the PP chose Congress. Feijóo replied yesterday that he was clear that “anywhere but Geneva and with a mediator”.
The Government, through Minister Félix Bolaños, yesterday urged the leader of the PP to agree to the renewal of the Council: “The rule of law would be hit hard tomorrow if the PP decided to renew the CGPJ”. Feijóo says that he is ready to resume the talks where they left off in 2022, even if the Socialists skip what was agreed with the appointment of two members of the Constitutional Council who are close to the Government.
The PP also does not rule out that there could be an agreement regarding the elimination of the term “decreased” in article 49 of the Constitution, and its replacement by “persons with disabilities”. In this case, the PP is also ready to resume negotiations at the point where the talks were left before the elections. He is asking for a written commitment from the PSOE that no amendment will be accepted on any matter that does not have to do with this article, to prevent the pro-independence parties from “including territorial issues”.
