When it has already been a year since the media break between Shakira and Gerard Piqué, the Colombian is still making headlines in relation to what happened. Now, the 46-year-old singer, who already lives in Miami with her two children, Milan and Sasha, aged 10 and 8, has revealed how she found out she “had been betrayed” by who her partner was.
Shakira gave an interview to People en Español, where she opened her heart to take stock of her life and talk about her parents and children. And above all, how music has become the best medicine in these complicated months.
At one point in the conversation, while talking about his father, William Mebarak, whom he defines as “my best friend”, he explains: “He went to Barcelona to console me when I was consumed with sadness due to the separation and, there, to first communion in Milan, was seriously injured in an accident. I found out from the press that I had been betrayed while the pope was in the ICU. I thought I wouldn’t survive that much. The man I loved the most in my life, my father, was gone when I needed him the most, but I couldn’t talk to him or receive the advice from my best friend that I would have needed so much”, he confesses.
“Little by little I’m getting it, I’m rebuilding the nest”, he says. He lives very dependent on the health of his 91-year-old father, who in six months has overcome a covid, two accidents, a pneumonia and five operations. Recently, she traveled to Colombia to accompany him to the last surgical intervention. “The recovery has been very hard and slow, but he is a wonderful man”, he explains.
The interpreter of Acróstico breaks down when she talks about her parents, who she considers “a reflection of the dream that I could not fulfill, but which hopefully means a model for my children of love, of patience with relationships, of dedication absolute and eager to live”.
And, once again, he highlights the passion he feels for his children, “the reason for my life: they inject me with indescribable strength every day”. He hopes to see them overcome “all the onslaughts of life” and hopes that “the pain they have unfairly faced” will make them more compassionate, stronger and nobler. When he thinks about the future, he wants Milan and Sasha to take care of their future families “with courage and honesty”.
“He saved my life and gave me wings to fly. She allowed me to be myself, she rescued me in the most difficult moments”, she admits. “He connected with who I truly am, when I felt like I was losing myself. When I didn’t recognize myself, music was my mirror.” And this was reflected in hits such as Te felicito , Monotonía , TQG …, and, of course, in the record-breaking collaboration with Bizarrap. Tomorrow will see the light of the new single, with Manuel Turizo, Copa vacía, whose lyrics say: “Siempre estás ocupado con tanto negocio; A little leisure would do you good, my love; relax and give me your attention. You don’t have to be a poet to sweeten my ear, drop the phone, use your hand with me, I know you’re good, but I’m much better than you.”
