George Clooney, in the movies and certainly in his private life, has seduced quite a few women, and quite a few women have tried to seduce him. It is more complicated for a football club to get it, although supporters of the English Derby County say it is from their team, and at the time it tried to acquire a stake in Málaga.
The seducer in this case is Como 1907, from the Italian Serie B (nothing to do with giants like Juve, Inter or Milan), taking advantage of the fact that Pisuerga passes through Valladolid. Which in this case translates into the fact that the American actor and producer, sports fan king, has a fabulous mansion on the shores of the lake in northern Italy that bears the same name as the team and than the city He has already launched many indirect ones, and he has set a few hooks, so far without success.
Serie B is not (at least not yet) Piqué’s Kings League, but Como 1907 aims to combine football with the world of entertainment, celebrities and gossip. It is a very particular club, owned by the Malaysian conglomerate Djarum, with ex-English international Dennis Wise as executive director in charge of signings, Thierry Henry and Cesc Fàbregas as investors, and the former Barça, Arsenal and Chelsea player as the most recognized star. Although he does not live in Italy, but in Switzerland, on the shores of a different lake (Lugano), and for training sessions and home matches he has to cross the border and make a three-quarter-mile drive time for Heidi’s landscapes.
More than football, Como is known as a place of leisure and entertainment for millionaires, legendary hotels, mythical spas and yachts plying the placid waters of the lake. As for the team, it has had its moments of relative glory, but has never established itself in Serie A. And since last being in the top flight, it has gone bankrupt twice and been relegated to Serie D, Dante’s darkest hell, only to go broke, without buying referees or paying an Italian Negreira (maybe Juventus did) or anything like that.
But Como 1907, with Fàbregas on board (he’s 35, his body is going as far as it will go and he’s admitted that in the future he’d like to be a coach, a first step towards sitting on a major bench in the Premier League), is heading towards above and has already climbed to the second Italian division, in which it occupies tenth place. And the fact that the Stadio Comunale Giuseppe Sinigaglia – a local war hero – with a capacity for only 13,000 spectators, which dates back to 1907 and was built at the express request of Mussolini, could use a coat of paint.
A lot comes through the eyes, and while there are many ways to seduce, beauty is important, as George Clooney knows. Hence the plan to modernize the Comunale, or demolish it and build a brand new one, with 21st century amenities. And from there, attract investors and stars, and have someone famous and with pockets full of money buy it. And if it’s the actor, better than better.
After four seasons at Monaco in the French Ligue 1, Cesc Fàbregas moved to Como last season with a two-year contract and the purchase of a small percentage of the club. The number 4 has given solidity to the midfield of the Lombard outfit and has stepped up in a career that has seen his brightest moments in London, particularly at the Emirates.
Will the great seducer be seduced? When Clooney falls into Como’s arms, if he does, there will be no more movie theaters and all movies will be on Netflix.
