Yesterday, a serious accident took place with one pedestrian dead and another seriously injured when part of a wall in the modernist area of ​​Sant Pau in Barcelona fell on top of them after a truck crashed into the wall.

The accident occurred shortly before nine in the morning on Carrer Sant Antoni Maria Claret with Independència, when a large tonnage truck with medical waste was leaving the old hospital.

The fatal victim was 71 years old and died at the scene of the accident. The 63-year-old woman was evacuated by the Medical Emergency System (EMS) of the Sant Pau hospital. The people were two pedestrians who were walking down the street at the time.

As the City Council reported yesterday, the driver of the truck tested negative for alcohol and drugs.

Teams from the Accident Investigation and Prevention Unit of the Urban Guard, the Barcelona Fire Department and the SEM, as well as the councilor of the Horta-Guinardó district, Rosa Alarcón, went to the scene of the accident. The fact also forced several bus lines to be diverted so that the emergency teams could work. The Urban Guard opened an investigation to clarify the causes.

With yesterday’s victim, eight people have died in traffic accidents in Barcelona since the beginning of the year, municipal sources reported.
