After weeks of negotiations, Guanyem, Junts and ERC closed a pact yesterday that will allow them to govern the city of Girona for the next four years. An agreement that turns Lluc Salellas (Guanyem) into mayor, and Gemma Geis (Junts), vice-mayor. The three formations underlined the “strength”, “solidity” and “stability” of a municipal government that will have 17 of the 27 representatives of the new municipal plenum that is constituted today. The winner of the elections, the PSC, predicts a period of “instability” and “uncertainty” for the city, taking into account the programmatic divergences that Junts i Guanyem have shown on some city issues.
The three formations say they have overcome their differences with “a lot of work” and “generosity”. In some central issues that have dotted the last mandate, it seems that the vision of Guanyem has prevailed, a confluence formed by several parties, including the CUP and MES, but also social and neighborhood entities. Regarding the ratio of tourist flats, with Junts and ERC in the government in the previous term, the plenary approved a limit of 15% for all sectors of the city. In the 64 projects that the tripartite government has committed to carry out, the maximum number of flats that can be allocated for this purpose in the city as a whole is reduced by up to 4%. The uses of Casa Pastors, where the future Museum of Modern Art was planned and which Guanyem opposes, unlike Junts and ERC, will also be “rethought”.
The creation of a Catalan language council or the reform of Carrer de la Creu, which was carried out only three years ago, are some of the commitments of the tripartite municipal government for this mandate. It will be the first time in democracy that Girona will not be governed by the force with the most votes, which on 28-M was the PSC.
