Ciudadanos won the parliamentary elections in December 2017 and today is struggling to survive. In Junts the diagnosis is clear: lack of local roots. That is why the post-convergents have put all the meat on the grill for tomorrow’s municipal elections.
The formation that was formed outside the PDECat in the summer of 2023 surpassed the regional elections of two years ago, held in the midst of a pandemic, but knows that a lot is at stake in this event, having a muscular and structured party that allows resistance when the things are not going well, as Convergència was able to do in its day during its particular journey through the desert, during the two tripartites.
The formation headed by Jordi Turull –who attended the final rally in Amer yesterday, the town of former president Carles Puigdemont– and Laura Borrà s –who ended her 28-M campaign tour in Cerdanyola del Vallès– has exploded for two weeks in equal parts the weakness of the monocolor Esquerra Government and the disaffection with the central administration, with the problems of Rodalies, the lack of investment or espionage as the most recurrent veins. “In the campaign we have to highlight the differences, then we will see what unites us and the pacts will come…”, said a veteran of the formation these days.
But beyond looking sideways and launching broadsides at the ERC and the PSC, in Junts they have tried to raise the morale of the sovereignist troops and launch slogans against discouragement and those disenchanted with the independence movement, knowing that abstention is now a risk . The motto used for this is simple: “good management – post-convergent seal – and independenceâ€.
In the municipal elections, Barcelona is the jewel in the crown and all eyes will be directed to the result obtained by Xavier Trias, who has reunited the post-convergent space and has campaigned without fanfare, in some cases vindicating the way of doing things from the extinct CDC and without speaking of excessive independence, with the support of Jordi Pujol Artur Mas and Puigdemont.
The numbers of the formation in the Catalan capital will be key for the party to finish defining what course it takes after the abrupt departure of the Executive in October. The most pragmatic sector of the formation trusts that a good result from Trias will give wings to his postulates. The polls are not bad for Junts, which a year ago – and perhaps half a year ago – could not have imagined this scenario and counts in favor of the fact that what the polls predict always improves. For now, a meeting of the JxCat national council, the party’s highest decision-making body, had been scheduled for June 3 to analyze the electoral results, but that appointment has been postponed until mid-June, when the analysis will be more serene.
But there is life beyond capital. Junts aspires to retain Girona and remain in the municipal governments of Tarragona and Lleida; to penetrate the metropolitan area of Barcelona, where he only obtained councilor in the first crown in the elections four years ago, that of Badalona, David Torrents; and to consolidate its power in cities such as Vic, Puigcerdà , Reus, Vilafranca del Penedès, Tortosa, Martorell, Igualada, Olot, Banyoles, Tà rrega, Figueres… each one with its casuistry and particularities. Some of them were governed by mayors from the post-convergent space who did not join Junts three years ago and who have now converged with Turull’s party, each with their formula.
