Factors to consider about sharia law and M-103, Feb. 20

There is an incredible amount of misconception and hysteria about sharia. If one reads the excellently written column by Faisal Kutty, the fog of ignorance that leads to Islamophobia and fear mongering will be cleared. Simply put, sharia means obeying the laws of the land, e.g. for Canadians, the Constitution of Canada.

Syed Mukarram, Scarborough

Mr. Kutty provides the reader with the breadth of human activity covered by the laws of sharia, but leaves out a few things, like the terrible consequences of not obeying the laws.

He should be warning the reader that if M-103 is sent to the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage, its report and recommendation to the government could suggest criminal legislation against any criticism of Islam.

Shirley Anne Haber, Toronto

It never fails to puzzle me why the Star runs what are clearly Islamist propaganda puff pieces without any rebuttals.

There is no such thing as sharia that is pluralistic, modern, filled with justice (as we know it), a “personal spiritual quest,” or representative of “diverse” views. It is repressive to all who follow either willingly or under pressure.

Gary Gerofsky, Hamilton

Kutty has to define Islamophobia. In the absence of that, any legitimate criticism of Islam will be interpreted as Islamophobia.

Naveen Chandra,

Enough already! Every issue of the Toronto Star contains at least one article or letter with the word “Islam.” If Islamophobia exists and is on the rise it is because your newspaper allocates so much space to those with Muslim point of views.

Dee Wajang, Oakville

I’m shocked (and somewhat appalled) that I agree with something said by MP Kellie Leitch. In explaining her opposition to the wording of non-binding anti-hate motion M-103, she is quoted as saying, “No religion should be singled out for special consideration.”

Howard Goodman, Toronto

To end the dehumanization of Muslims, fellow Canadians must starve out Islamophobia, its financiers and its spokespersons with education, truth and compassion. Exactly what Motion 103 is proposing.
