It is so dramatic, as the belgian Wout Van Aert crashed under the age of 13. stage in this year’s Tour de France.
The now 25-year-old Jumbo-Visma-rider was an absolute top spot in the time trial, when he in a right turn collided with a gang.
A hook from the gang got a hold of his leg and ripped literally thigh up on him. The damage was so severe, that the team doctor had to cover the injured rider’s leg with an ad banner, so he wouldn’t go into further shock at the sight.
Subsequently, Van Aert fejlopereret in France and returned home to Belgium for a new operation, which has left a wound on the 21 inches down over his right thigh.
A recent scan shows that everything now is grown good together, and Van Aert should have no problems with the thigh muscle, once it is trained up again.
But the whole experience, which has cost him the rest of the season, may end up with a lawsuit against ASO, which organises the Tour de France. It says Van Aert to the belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad:
– It is clear that the extent of the damage was a consequence of the barrierernes location, says the belgian, who through the Jumbo-Visma has established dialogue to the ASO and is probably going to ask for financial compensation.
– It appears the team and my manager at the moment, says Wout Van Aert.
He comes back to the road for next season, but actually in the hope that the triple world champion in cyclo-cross, that he may run a few races in the cross-season before that.
– I hope not, that I have to sit over. I will do everything I can to be able to run a few crossløb over the winter. I don’t know if it is realistic. But the fact is that the cross is a good preparation for landevejssæsonen, and I love to run it, says Van Aert.
The belgian enkeltstartsmester has this season won four victories, the greatest, as he was fastest on the line to 10. stage in the Tour de France.
