González Pons will direct the PP campaign

One day after the name of the PSOE candidate for the European elections on June 9 was revealed, who, in the absence of her official designation, will be vice president Teresa Ribera, the PP has made a move by announcing that Esteban González Pons will be his campaign director, which rules him out, in principle, as the head of the list and reinforces Dolors Montserrat’s options.

Sources from the PP have confirmed this Wednesday the appointment of the vice-secretary of institutional action of the executive of Alberto Núñez Feijóo as campaign director, whose committee will meet tomorrow, Thursday at the headquarters on Génova Street to launch the party machinery for the elections. decisive elections to the European Parliament on June 9, in which the popular Europeans start as big favorites.

Deputy in Congress, where he is spokesperson for the joint European Affairs commission and member of the Justice and Defense commissions, González Pons has a long career: after being a senator (1993-2003) and occupying a seat in the Lower House for Valencia (2008-2014), has been an MEP in the last two terms (2014-2023), a period in which he was appointed vice president of the European popular group, and since 2022 he has been vice president of the European People’s Party.

The experienced Valencian politician has led the negotiations on the part of the PP with the Minister of the Presidency, Justice and Relations with the Cortes, Félix Bolaños, for the renewal of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ), which were very close to the agreement in the previous legislature and that have subsequently been developed in the European Parliament with the mediation of the Commissioner for Justice, Didier Reynders, although, for the moment, they have not produced results.

With his appointment, these sources assure, the PP “seeks to be a strong voice in Europe against the policies of lies and corruption” of which it accuses the Government of Pedro Sánchez and intends to become “the loudspeaker of economic and social initiatives that strengthen the well-being” of Spain.

Be that as it may, the appointment of González Pons as campaign director may serve to clear up the mystery of who will lead the PP candidacy, since the current head of the popular delegation in Brussels, Dolors Montserrat, whose name was also suggested to lead the project of Feijóo in the Parliament of Catalonia, has never hidden his vocation to continue in the European Parliament.

The last word, in any case, will be Feijóo himself, who before the Catalan elections on May 12 will have to decide, together with his team, the European list as a whole, in which Adrián Vázquez, who negotiated the incorporation of Ciudadanos and resigned as general secretary of the liberal party when his purpose was frustrated, may have a relevant place.
