The political parties in Spain have their structures, their principles and their anthems, but when five o’clock in the afternoon arrives, the hour of truth, there is only one reality: here I am in charge and “whoever moves does not leave in the photo” (a phrase, by the way, by Alfonso Guerra).

The sexist insolence at the expense of Yolanda Díaz’s hairstyles has provided ammunition to those who so dislike an objective fact: Felipe González and Alfonso Guerra, 81 and 83 years old, are listened to attentively when they speak.

And that’s the problem…

In addition to being sexist, the dart at the hairdressing salon is just as easy – it looks like a lie, maestro! – as is the recourse of the detractors – we don’t play tricks on the solitaire – in the sense that, of course, poor people, they have an age. They repape, wow.

Age is precisely the political advantage of the González-Guerra tandem. Because the fact of being back and accumulating experience gives clarity to those who were not fools in their twenties and dispels the suspicion that they are looking for some income. What should they be looking for now, except to express what they believe, instead of spending the day in a residence waiting for the first lunch shift?

I don’t know if what they are arguing is good for Spain, Real Betis Balompié or the survival of the Guadiana sturgeon, but I don’t see any drawback – on the contrary – in the fact that two socialists who contributed so much to our democracy can express their opposition in the forums where they have an audience. And if they irritate you, there is always the demagogic resource of mentioning in a tweet or a sentence in Congress the “quick lime” thing, which is what those do who in a serious debate or a parliamentary session would not even last five minutes

Great artists are not retired by anyone except the public. Or the absence of an audience. If the reappearance of González and Guerra resonates with many, it is because they retain enough prestige to call into question socialism itself – or is it a matter of blowing the whistle and everyone doing the trick? – the hypothetical amnesty law. I suppose that the defenders of this amnesty must not imagine that such a momentous decision can or should be a military outing…
