The two Catalan pro-independence parties represented in Congress do not share unity of action, but they act almost the same: with the banner of silence. Only two switchboards break it and with a dropper: in Esquerra, the one installed in Switzerland with the voice of its general secretary, Marta Rovira, and in Junts, the one located in Waterloo, with Carles Puigdemont, and the general secretary, Jordi Turull, covering it from Catalonia. It will only be known if the strategy of not airing the contacts through the media has been profitable just before ten in the morning today, when the constitution session of Congress begins.
The competition for the revenues of this silent strategy will emerge. Right of self-determination, amnesty, Catalan in Las Cortes, investigating espionage with Pegasus are part of the demands.
Aina Vidal, number of the commons, interpreted the silence of Junts as “a good sign”. The post-convergents meet telematically at eight in the morning. It is expected that it will be then when the majority of members of the Junts leadership know about Puigdemont’s proposal. It remains to be seen if he will be present at the meeting. In previous appointments, such as those that had to decide if the party left the Government, he did not attend.
In ERC, until now, only members of its management have shared information. Yesterday afternoon they still did not have an agreement with the PSOE and they only planned to summon their executive if progress is made in the negotiation. “For days we warned that it was foolhardy to take the ERC votes for granted,” sources say.
The bloc led by the PSOE requires the contest of at least one of the two pro-independence parties. From here, Coalición Canaria could be key to tipping the balance in one direction or another if ERC or Junts (more likely in the latter) are inclined to vote null or abstain. The socialist Francina Armengol waits to be elected president of the Congress.
Yesterday, Puigdemont claimed “verifiable facts before committing any vote.” The media flash by ERC was given by Marta Rovira, to reject the gesture of Pedro Sánchez, who promised to promote the use of Catalan in Europe. “You already assumed that and sealed the agreements at the negotiating table on July 7, 2022,” she recalled. It has not been fulfilled.
